Coming Out

Below are some of the resources we’ve compiled to help ease the process of coming out. Just know that there is no pressure to do so if you feel unsafe, or not ready to do so. Your identity is your own and only you can know when the right time is.

  • Being an LGBTIQA+ Person of Colour

    A thorough research paper outlining the challenges specific to ethnic groups, the significance of LGBT in cultures, sexual and ethnic identity development, and finding empowerment.

  • Coming Out and Disclosure

    An interactive website that outlines the difference between coming out, disclosure and inviting in, safer ways to disclose, highlighting different experiences in sharing one’s identity and possible challenges and solutions.

  • Coming Out as YOU

    A colourful and youth-friendly guide to coming out. It includes alternative ways of coming out, timing and location, tips on coming out, warning signs and creating a safety plan.

  • Coming Out: A Resource for LGBTIQA+ Students

    A helpful PDF for LGBTIQA+ students on coming out including considerations to make before coming out with regards to school, home life, community and confidentiality.

  • Coming Out: Living Authentically as Black LGBTIQA+ People

    A detailed video presentation with tips on coming out, intersectionality of being Black and queer, reconciling faith and queerness, and representation in politics and film,

  • Coming Out: Living Authentically as Lesbian, Gay and Bisexual +

    A video presentation on what it means to be LGB+ and how to come out. It features discussion around creating disclosure plans, how to handle different reactions to coming out, and additional resources.

Me and My Doctor

We know visiting your local doctor’s office can be intimidating, especially if you’re an LGBTIQA+ young person. No matter what medical professional you see – whether they’re a GP, psychologist, nurse, etc – there are certain things you can expect when receiving health care.

This resource is an LGBTQIA+ adaption of the Australian Charter of Healthcare Rights, which covers your rights and responsibilities when receiving health care.

    A detailed look into the experience of trans and queer people of colour in the school environment. The document explores everything from navigating race and sexual orientation in various spaces, how to navigate systematic racism and intersectionality within a campus, and suggestions for leadership opportunities and identity development for people of colour.

    A comprehensive document providing definitions, personal experiences, information on the law and obligations of teachers in religious education environments and the importance of ensuring the safety and wellbeing of LGBTIQA+ in religious school. This includes definitions of LGBTIQA+ identities in relation to Catholic morals, pastoral care, a literature review, and details of the issues that occur.

  • Developing LGBTIQA+ – Inclusive Classroom Resources

    A document that outlines ways in which teachers can design lessons that are more inclusive and remove bias by displaying positive representation of LGBTIQA+ people, history, and events. This includes making curriculums inclusive but not alienating, advocacy tips, and suggested learning topics grade by grade (primary to high school).

    A project by YPN & Walkern Katatdjin, where we connect young LGBTIQA+ mob with community Elders to discuss and learn about queer identity.

    The Rainbow Realities report has been commissioned by the Commonwealth Department of Health and Aged Care to inform development of the 10-year LGBTIQA+ Health and Wellbeing Action Plan. It reflects the commitment of the Australian Government to ensure the needs and experiences of LGBTIQA+ people are carefully considered in the development of the Action Plan.
